So Nebraska has won back-to-back conference road games for the first time since the Taft Administration was in office, and a few die-hard Husker fans are thinking NCAA tournament.
That’s a nice thought die-hards, but stop right there.
I’m not saying that getting to the NCAA tournament can’t be done, I’m just saying it won’t.
Here’s what NU has left on the schedule.
More:
Sat, Feb 7 (16) Texas
Sat, Feb 14 at Missouri
Wed, Feb 18 Colorado
Sat, Feb 21 at (21) Kansas
Tue, Feb 24 Texas A&M
Sat, Feb 28 at Kansas St.
Wed, Mar 4 Iowa St.
Sat, Mar 7 at Baylor
The Huskers are currently 14-7 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12 Conference. So, let’s say that NU wins four of the next eight – which is pushing it.
Keep in mind, they’ve got three bad losses already – Iowa State, Oregon State and Maryland-Baltimore County.
Four more losses, and they finish 18-11 and 8-8 and would have to likely reach the conference tournament final to earn an NCAA bid. With the Polish Rifle confined to FSN color commentary, that’s about as likely to happen as, well, Iowa State reaching the conference tournament finals.
A more likely scenario is that Nebraska beats Colorado and Iowa State t home and sneaks past K-State on the road. They finish 17-12 and 7-9, win one game in the conference tournament and settle for an NIT bid.
Considering the team’s tallest player is somewhere around 5-foot-6, that’s quite an accomplishment. And you can never argue this team’s effort – which seems to keep it in almost every game.
But this is Doc Sadler’s third year, and you’d expect a turnaround by now.
Question is: where is it?
